The USB 3 port supports bus-powered drives with a power requirement of 0.9 A (900 mA) or less, as well as drives connected to an AC adapter.
The USB 3 port provides 0.9 A (900 mA) of current. Therefore, devices requiring 1.0 A will charge more slowly than with the factory power adapter. Larger devices, such as tablets that require 2.1 A, will not charge. The USB 3 (or USB 2) port does not supply power when the host computer is powered off or in sleep mode.
