Replacing air with helium in a hard drive dramatically reduces turbulence caused by the spinning platter, lowers power consumption, and results in a lower drive temperature. This reduction in turbulence allows HGST to offer a seven-platter design in a traditional 3.5-inch form factor. The HGST Ultrastar He6 is not only the world's first helium-filled hard drive, but it's also the industry's first 6-terabyte hard drive. This design offers a 50% increase in capacity while reducing the power required to operate the drive by up to 23%.
