Sonnet Echo Express SEL - Thunderbolt 3 Edition
Use your low-profile PCIe card with Thunderbolt computers
Ultra-light notebooks and all-in-one desktop computers today are extremely small and light. However, these powerful and flexible computers do not offer the possibility to install a PCIe card. However, Mac® and Windows® (1) computers that have Thunderbolt TM 3 ports can be expanded externally. The Sonnet Echo Express SEL Thunderbolt 3 Edition allows you to connect a low-profile PCIe card externally to your computer. The Thunderbolt 3 to PCIe expansion chassis' x8 PCIe 3.0 slot can connect a variety of Thunderbolt-compatible 16Gb and 8Gb Fiber Channel, 40 and 10 Gigabit Ethernet, video editing, SAS, and SATA host devices. Bus adapter and RAID controller cards can be used
The 40Gbps Thunderbolt 3 interface of the Echo Express SEL is twice as fast as a Thunderbolt 2 interface. With a bandwidth of up to 2750 MB/s, 4K video recording and processing cards with high frame rates, as well as 16Gb FC cards and dual 10GbE cards can be operated with their full performance (2)(3). Thunderbolt 3 supports not only the fastest PCIe cards, but also up to two 4K displays at 60 Hz or one 5K display at 60 Hz (4) . A range of Thunderbolt (5) and USB (6) peripherals are also supported.
Small package, full performanceMeasuring just 10 x 21 x 7 cm, the Echo Express SEL Thunderbolt 3 Edition is ideal for a single low-profile PCIe card. Most Thunderbolt-compatible high-speed network and storage controller cards fit perfectly in the compact housing. Even the BlueFish444 Epoch 4K Neutron Video card finds enough space. |

Thunderbolt 3 - The USB-C connection for every applicationThe Thunderbolt 3 Edition of the Echo Express SEL features two Thunderbolt (USB-C) ports; the first connects to the computer and the second supports a daisy chain of devices with up to five other Thunderbolt peripherals. The SEL supports 10Gbps USB 3.1 Gen 2, which means you can connect a USB device to the second port with the appropriate cable. Furthermore, the SEL supports up to two 60 Hz 4K displays or one 60 Hz (4) 5K display. For external devices with higher power consumption (7), 15 watts are available via the integrated bus power connection. |

(Connect the first port of the Thunderbolt 3 Echo Express SEL to the computer and use the second to daisy chain up to five additional Thunderbolt devices (plus two 4K displays, or one 5K display, or one USB 3.0 device) |

Smart design, inside and outThe robust housing made of light aluminum offers perfect protection for the installed PCIe card. The internal fan is temperature-controlled and the temperature management automatically adjusts the airflow to the cooling requirements of the installed card, so that it is optimally and very quietly cooled at all times. The Thunderbolt 3 Edition of the Echo Express SEL does not have a power button because it turns on and off automatically with your computer. This saves energy and you can't forget to switch off the device. Silence PleaseThe Thunderbolt 3 Edition of the Echo Express SEL is remarkably quiet. The specially developed housing concept and the temperature-controlled fan ensure particularly quiet and efficient operation in noise-sensitive environments. As a result, the installed card is optimally and quietly cooled at all times, even when peak loads occur.

Thunderbolt 3 cable (40Gbps) and ThunderLok ™ 3 included To connect the Echo Express SEL Thunderbolt 3 Edition to your computer, we include a 0.5m Thunderbolt 3 cable. A ThunderLok 3 cable lock (8) is also included, which firmly connects the Thunderbolt cable to the Echo housing. Loss of data as a result of unintentionally unplugging the cable is thus avoided. The Sonnet ThunderLok 3 is easy to install. The cable lock is simply pulled over one of the cable ends, the cable is plugged in and the connection is screwed to the housing using a knurled screw. Due to its unique design, the ThunderLok stays on the cable, even when it is not connected to a device. |

Technical Footnotes
- Windows computers require the latest firmware (BIOS) and appropriate drivers to support this product. Not all Mac compatible PCIe cards are also Windows compatible. See table of Thunderbolt compatible PCIe cards for details.
- The Thunderbolt 3 Edition of the Echo Express SEL features a 40Gbps Thunderbolt 3 interface. Some Thunderbolt 3 computers, such as the Dell Precision 5510 or Alienware 13 R2, have an implementation of Thunderbolt 3 technology that limits PCIe performance to 20Gbps. The right Thunderbolt 3 ports of the 15-inch MacBook Pro (Late 2016, Touchbar) are also limited to 20Gbps, while the ports on the left deliver the full 40Gbps.
- To get full performance, use of the included Thunderbolt 3 (40Gbps) cable, or other Thunderbolt 3 (40Gbps) cables is required. You can identify these cables by looking for the Thunderbolt logo and the number 3 on the cable's connector.
- A 4K screen is directly supported. To be able to use two 4K screens, a 4K monitor with multi-stream transport support (DP out) or a Thunderbolt 3 to Dual DisplayPort adapter is required. 5K displays often require a Thunderbolt 3 to Dual DisplayPort adapter.
- The second Thunderbolt 3 port supports Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 devices on a Mac when using an Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter. This is available separately.
- The second Thunderbolt 3 port supports USB 3.1 Gen 1 (5Gb) or Gen 2 (10Gb) devices when connected via an appropriate cable or adapter. These are sold separately.
- The Thunderbolt 3 Edition of the Echo Express SEL only delivers 15W of upstream power, which is typically not enough to power and charge a computer.
- The ThunderLok 3 is compatible with all 0.5m Thunderbolt 3 cables, or with all 20Gbps 1m and 2m Thunderbolt 3 cables.
- PCIe cards are sold separately.
- Drivers that can recognize Thunderbolt technology are required. These are available from the manufacturer. See Table of Thunderbolt Compatible PCIe Cards . Please contact the card manufacturer for the latest information on their Thunderbolt compatibility.
- The 1m Thunderbolt 3 (40Gbps) cable may have a slight impact on the card's performance if it relies on very large bandwidths. This cable is not compatible with the ThunderLok 3.
