ThunderBay Flex 8 offers eight drive bays supporting a mix of SATA/SAS and U.2/M.2 NVMe drives for virtually unlimited storage capacity.
Next, there's a plethora of ports, including (2) Thunderbolt 3, (1) USB-C, and (2) USB-A for docking and charging devices. See your work in detail by adding up to an 8K display via an onboard DisplayPort 1.4 connector.
Capture high-resolution images and videos via front-panel SD 4.0 and CFexpress card readers. And if you want to expand your desktop capabilities, a PCIe slot is available for your specific project needs. ThunderBay Flex 8 is the only Thunderbolt 3 desktop device that can do them all.

With an irresistible advantage of scale, this consolidated solution is ideal for those waiting for the right moment to invest in Thunderbolt technology. NVMe.
PCIe. What does that mean for me? At the heart of ThunderBay Flex 8 capabilities are two cutting-edge technology standards: NVMe and PCIe.
Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) optimizes the performance of modern flash technology over the PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) standard. It enables significantly faster SSD performance with a more direct and optimized path to a computer's processor. The Thunderbolt 3 interface, which uses the PCIe bus, ties these two technologies together.

This interface provides the fastest possible data transfer over a single cable between computers and peripherals such as storage solutions, docks, and expansion devices while delivering charging power. The future standard for storage available today
All eight bays accept SATA 6Gb/s 2.5" SSDs or 3.5" HDDs.

To take advantage of 40Gb/s PCIe technology, the top four bays are NVMe U.2 SSD capable. These upcoming super-fast SSDs enable ThunderBay Flex 8 to meet the future storage needs of content developers and video production professionals. A protective, economical solution for post-production
Shipping a drive from set to post-production typically requires tedious and time-consuming disassembly of the drive case to access the storage drive, or costly shipping the entire case to the post lab.
However, ThunderBay Flex 8 offers another option. Installing an OWC U.2 NVMe replacement system carrier tray (sold separately) with an integrated U.2 connector into a ThunderBay Flex 8 drive tray protects the U.2 SSD drive connector from repeated wear during install/removal protect, improving drive longevity and investment.

When you're done with your recording, simply ship the lightweight backing and drive to the lab where the backing can be installed into an OWC Helios 3S using the OWC Interchange System. It's a one-stop solution to protect your data while reducing shipping costs. Muscle FLEXing Data Performance
Are you a video pro working with high speed 4K/8K and even phantom files? The ThunderBay Flex 8 offers a variety of drive configurations that deliver real world read/write speeds of 2750MB/s that saturate the Thunderbolt 3 speed bump. Try one of these options:

  • A single U.2 NVMe SSD in Bay A
  • Multiple U.2 SSDs installed in the top four bays (AD) of RAID 0
  • Six or more SATA SSDs in any bay in RAID 0
  • Replace the built-in SATA drive controller card with a SATA/SAS hardware RAID card and configure 8 xSATA/SAS drives in hardware RAID 0

Finished with the drives but need the docking connectivity?

Eject ThunderBay Flex 8 drives and all external drives with a single click with the free OWC Dock Ejector app. It ensures all data has been written before a drive is ejected to protect against data loss. It even warns you about accidentally ejecting a drive that is in use. Docking FLEXIBILITY
With the docking connections built into ThunderBay Flex 8, a virtual buffet of productivity-enhancing possibilities awaits you.

Power your notebook with up to 85 W of power while recording high-resolution multi-stream footage at full frame rate. Connect audio and video mixers, digital cameras, keyboards and other peripherals, and charge mobile devices with one USB-C and two USB-A 10Gb/s ports. Instantly read and work with 4/8K RAW video and RAW photo files at speeds up to 985MB/s with front SD 4.0 and CFexpress card readers. Add more display real estate with up to an 8K monitor via the DisplayPort 1.4 interface. And if all of that isn't enough to meet your project needs, daisy chain up to five additional Thunderbolt 3 devices! FLEXpandable for Unique Needs By removing
the side panel of the chassis, you can expand your options by installing a half-length, full-height, single-width expansion card into the PCIe x16 connector/x4 lanes slot.

Add a 4K video capture card for direct ingest of high-resolution, multi-stream footage. Record high-quality tracks with an audio card, then edit and archive them. Build a powerful file server with a high-speed network card. By replacing the onboard SATA drive controller with a SATA or SAS RAID card, you can even turn ThunderBay Flex 8 into a hardware RAID storage solution while keeping a PCIe slot open for other cards. A FLEX-Common Platform
ThunderBay Flex 8 is a user-configurable platform that enables you to launch projects with new time- and cost-saving outcomes. To get started, we propose three sample configurations to help you make the most of the exceptional highlights that have made OWC solutions the choice of performance enthusiasts and cinematographers around the world:

Sample
Configurations FLEX Empty- An empty enclosure in which you can install your choice of drives and PCIe cards.
You can remove the SATA drive controller card to add a RAID or SAS drive controller card. FLEX Open - The bottom four bays are populated with SATA drives while the top four bays are empty for use with U.2 NVMe drives, M.2 NVMe drives with adapter, or SATA/SAS drives.
FLEX Full - All bays filled with SATA drives, one bay remains as a cold spare, the other seven preconfigured in RAID 0 or RAID 5 with SoftRAID

Includes Softraid: Simple and complete drive management
Now with SoftRAID for Mac and Windows you can quickly open up Access your data and protect it reliably.
With SoftRAID, creating RAID volumes becomes a breeze as SoftRAID assists you throughout the process. With multiple RAID options, you decide what to use your RAID volume for and how much space to allocate to it. It's that easy to create your preference of speed and/or redundancy for your data volume. Remarks

  1. SAS drives are supported with SAS drive controller card (sold separately).
  2. Up to four U.2 drives are supported. M.2 drives are also supported with an M.2 to U.2 adapter (sold separately).
  3. Apple Mac models with Thunderbolt 2/Thunderbolt ports can be connected using an Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter (sold separately). This configuration offers data transfer at up to 20 Gb/s, but does not support charging of notebooks.
  4. Full performance of DisplayPort 1.4 depends on the host computer supporting the DisplayPort 1.4 specification through its Thunderbolt 3 connector, the host computer's GPU capabilities, and the interconnect cable capabilities.
